This activity class characterizes the process of knowledge workers requesting or locating information that they need for the performance of their job. Research includes reading, print and online documents, social interactions (face-to-face, telephone and e-mail), product trial and use, survey data collection, and field data collection (observation and fact-gathering). The research activity includes attendance in tradeshows, exhibitions, and seminars and workshops.

Learning describes a set of activities associated with personal or professional development, and self-directed motivation.
